[edit] Background

Little is known about the UNSC Army. This may be due to the fact that the Army is a land based fighting force, and thus little of the Army is assigned to the UNSC Navy, with the exception of transport to other planets. Based on its name and hinted role, one can assume that the UNSC Army is mainly for planetary defense. It is also known that the UNSC Army may use different equipment such as the M6J Carbine.

[edit] Organization

[edit] Squad

In military terminology, a squad is a small military unit led by a non-commissioned officer (NCO) that is subordinate to an infantry platoon. In the army a squad consists of eight to fourteen soldiers, and may be further subdivided into fireteams.

  • 8-14 Soldiers = 1 Squad

[edit] Platoon

A platoon is a military unit, typically composed of two to four squads and containing about 30 to 50 soldiers. Platoons are organized into a company, which typically consists of three, four or five platoons. A platoon is typically the smallest military unit led by a commissioned officer — the platoon leader or platoon commander, usually a lieutenant. He is usually assisted by a senior non-commissioned officer — the platoon sergeant.

  • 2-4 Squads = 1 Platoon

[edit] Company/Battery/Troop

A company is a military unit, typically consisting of 75-280 soldiers. Most companies are formed of three to five platoons although the exact number may vary by country, unit type, and structure. Several companies are grouped to form a battalion.

A Company also has other names that are used in different branches within the Army. For the Artillery it is called a Battery and for Armored it is called a Troop.

  • 3-5 Platoons = 1 Company

[edit] Battalion

A Battalion is a military unit of around 500-1680 men usually consisting of between two and six companies and typically commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel. Several battalions are grouped to form a brigade.

  • 2-6 Companies = 1 Battalion

[edit] Brigade/Regiment

A brigade is a military unit that is typically composed of two to five battalions. Usually, a brigade is a sub-component of a division, a larger unit consisting of two or more brigades; however, some brigades are classified as a separate brigade and operate independently from the traditional division structure.

A Brigade also has other names that are used in different branches within the Army. For the Infantry a Brigade is called a Regiment.

  • 2-5 Battalions = 1 Brigade

[edit] Division

A division is a large military unit or formation usually consisting of around ten to twenty thousand soldiers. In most armies, a division is composed of several regiments or brigades, and in turn several divisions make up a corps. A division tends to be the largest combined arms unit capable of independent operations; due to its self-sustaining role as a unit with a range of combat troops and suitable combat support forces, which can be divided into various organic combinations.

  • 3+ Brigades = 1 Division

[edit] Corps

A corps is a battlefield formation composed of two or more divisions, and typically commanded by a lieutenant general. Multiple corps are combined into field armies. The number of a corps is traditionally indicated in Roman numerals (e.g. XXI Corps), while the number of a division is usually written in Arabic numerals (e.g. 4th Infantry Division) and that of an army written in words (e.g. Seventh Army).

  • 2+ Divisions = 1 Corps

[edit] Field Army

A Field Army; otherwise known as Armies; are composed of a headquarters, army troops, a variable number of corps, and a variable number of divisions. A battle is influenced at the Field Army level by transferring divisions and reinforcements from one corps to another to increase the pressure on the enemy at a critical point. Armies are controlled by a General or Lieutenant General.

  • Corps = 1 Field Army

[edit] Trivia

  • While no Army units have been identified, Tango Company might be one. Its members are referred to as soldiers, not Marines. However, until further information is revealed, it is assumed that Tango Company is a Marine unit.
  • The only known confirmed member of the UNSC Army is Colonel James Ackerson, an intelligence officer in the ONI who was once an infantryman. He is seen in an Army Dress Uniform.
  • A joke among members of the Halo community is that the UNSC actually has two Armies, Red and Blue. This is a reference to Red vs. Blue, a popular Halo machinima.
  • The UNSC Army has its own variant of the M6; the M6J Carbine.
  • The Colonial Militia could be part of the UNSC Army.
